I've
had hundreds of visitors ask me for information on where
to obtain a local business licenses and
whether or not they are needed. To
answer this your best resource of information will be your
local SBA Office. Certain
types of business require certain permits and licenses
that others don't require. If
you have a restaurant for example, in Texas you need a
Food Handlers permit, sales tax license as well as a tax
id for tax reporting purposes. Every
state and also city has different restrictions. Contact
your local SBA Office as well as your state and local
county offices. You may need to register a DBA (Doing
Business As) assumed name and provide this to your bank
when you open your account. To
find your local SBA Office visit their website, http://www.sba.gov
Other
contact sources you should look for in your yellow pages
are titles for offices such as: County
or City Records - This may be located in your local court
house. Usually where you find the office in which to
register your business name and where you'll receive a
copy of the DBA document so you can open a business bank
account. State
or County Health Department - This may be where your
health department issues certifications. State
Departments - You may find state government websites that
provide numbers to offices where you can find out where
you need to apply for certain licenses. City
& County Local Offices - Look in your business pages
or government pages to find local offices for state Liquor
License offices for example. You may also find state
health offices if your state requires you have a license
to run a beauty or nail salon for example. Another
resource is OSHA. http://www.osha.gov
